The screening, hosted by Loyola Marymount University, was part of the 21st Chinese American Film Festival and the Chinese American Television Festival, a celebration of cultural exchange and understanding. The event also marked a stop on the roadshow, "Capture the Moments of Friendship: a Cinematic Record of China-U.S. Relations," a collaborative effort between film companies, publishers, and universities from both countries.
"DEAR KULIANG" is a 50-minute journey that explores the century-old story of Kuliang, a place in Fujian Province, China, renowned for its warm relationships between American residents and local Chinese communities. The documentary follows American high school student Holly as she embarks on a quest to China, tracing her family's history and uncovering the rich tapestry of cross-cultural connections.
The production, which took nearly two years to complete, was filmed across multiple locations in China and the United States, capturing the essence of this unique story. Producer Zhang Yuehan explained that the documentary aims to revive historical moments and showcase the human warmth that has fostered China-US people-to-people exchanges for generations.
Victoria Popescu, a student at Loyola Marymount University, shared her thoughts on the documentary, saying, "It was eye-opening to see the depth of connections between these two cultures. James Su, chairman of EDI Media Inc. and organizer of the Chinese American Film Festival and the Chinese American Television Festival, expressed his hope that the documentary would foster deeper mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and the United States.
The annual festivals, founded in 2005, have traditionally been held in Los Angeles every November. The Los Angeles County Office has even designated November as "Chinese American Film Festival and Chinese American Television Festival Month," further emphasizing the importance of these cultural events.
