How Do You Make Christmas Room Spray

The most wonderful time of the year is right around the corner! Can you believe it? I created these awesome holiday room spray recipes to help us all get into the holiday spirit.

I’m not a very big fan of candles. And honestly, I can’t stand air freshener either. Not only does air freshener give me a headache, but it is also filled with really nasty chemicals that can harm your health.

Air fresheners are filled with endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, allergens, and many other nasty things.

They can really wreak havoc on your health and the health of your family and pets!

Synthetic fragrance overload can actually trigger allergies and even asthma. Air fresheners, like some candles, may also contain formaldehyde, a well-known carcinogen.

I threw all my air fresheners out long before I learned of the dangers, simply because they always gave me a pounding headache.

I prefer to freshen up my home naturally with essential oils.

I always diffuse essential oils in my essential oil diffusers, but I also love to freshen up my home with homemade room sprays made with essential oils.

DIY Holiday Room Spray Ingredients

These holiday room sprays are so easy to make, and you only need a few ingredients to put them together. Everything you will need is below.

Spray Bottles

The size of the spray bottle and the amount of spray bottles you need is totally up to you. I prefer to use 4-ounce bottles like these. But you can use whichever size you prefer.

Just keep in mind that the recipe below is for a 4-ounce bottle of room spray, so if you decide to use a larger or smaller bottle, you will need to adjust the recipe.

There are a total of nine different holiday scents listed below. If you plan on just making one scent, then all you will need is one bottle. But if you want to make them all, you will need at least nine bottles.

It’s also really important to only use dark glass bottles. Essential oils contain strong chemical compounds that can break down and react when coming in contact with plastic.

Essential oils can also go bad if exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

Water

Water is the base for these homemade holiday room sprays. It is best to use distilled water whenever possible.

The minerals in tap water can clog your spray nozzle and leave residue on your home’s surfaces.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are, of course, what gives these holiday room sprays their scent. You will need a variety of essential oils to make all the different holiday scents listed below.

I also highly recommend using only 100% pure essential oils. A few of my favorite essential oil brands are Plant Therapy, Simply Earth, and .

Fake essential oils are just as bad as synthetic air fresheners and candles. It’s important only to use essential oils that you know are pure.

You can read this article – Fake Essential Oil Brands You Should Avoid – to learn how to identify fake essential oils.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel helps to combine the essential oils and water, which helps the scent to linger longer.

How Do You Use Holiday Room Spray?

To use this holiday room spray, simply shake well before use and spritz all around the room. It can also be sprayed directly onto pillows, curtains, blankets, or couches.

Why Do You Need Witch Hazel in Room Spray?

Witch hazel is an important ingredient in homemade room sprays. It helps to combine the essential oils and water, which helps the scent to linger longer.

What Can I Use Instead of Witch Hazel in Room Spray?

If you don’t have witch hazel on hand, you can use drinkable grain alcohol (ethanol)or vodka instead.

I decided to use witch hazel in this recipe because many people already have it on hand, and it can be easily found at your local drugstore.

Plus, I’m not 100% comfortable using room spray made with high-proof alcohol around my family as it can be an upper respiratory irritant.

And it can also be difficult to mask the strong alcohol scent.

Is Witch Hazel or Vodka Better for Room Spray?

Some claim that using vodka instead of witch hazel will help the scent last longer, but I’ve tried both and didn’t notice any difference.

In my opinion, witch hazel and vodka serve the same purpose and are both great for making DIY Christmas room sprays, other than the fact that not everyone is comfortable using room spray made with vodka around their family.

Can You Use Rubbing Alcohol Instead of Witch Hazel for Room Spray?

Rubbing alcohol can be used instead of witch hazel as well. I prefer not to use it because I am not 100% sure that it is safe.

Currently, it is not classified as a carcinogen, but in my opinion, it has the potential to be a hazardous chemical.

Isopropyl alcohol can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. It can irritate the nose and throat and repeated high exposure can cause dizziness, headaches, confusion, and more.

Tips For Using DIY Christmas Room Sprays

Always shake well before using. If the room spray does not have a strong enough scent add more drops of essential oil.
