India's Batting Collapse: Coach Gambhir's Blunt Assessment | India vs South Africa 1st Test Review (2025)

Did India's batting lineup just crumble under pressure, handing a shocking defeat to the home team on their own turf? Coach Gautam Gambhir certainly thinks so, and he's not holding back his opinions. In a dramatic turn of events at Eden Gardens, the Indian team was bowled out for a mere 93 runs in the second session on day three, gifting a 30-run victory to the visiting South African Test world champions. A low-scoring match on a turning, unpredictable pitch – what went wrong?

South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, etched his name into the match's narrative with a resilient, unbeaten 55 in his side's second innings total of 153. It was the only half-century scored in the entire contest! But when India took to the chase, only Washington Sundar, with a patient 31 off 92 deliveries, demonstrated any real grit. South African off-spinner Simon Harmer capitalized, bagging impressive figures of 4-21.

But here's where it gets controversial... Gambhir refused to point fingers at the pitch. Instead, he squarely placed the blame on the Indian batsmen. "There were no demons in this wicket," Gambhir boldly stated to reporters. "It was not an unplayable wicket. It was a wicket where your technique can be judged, your mental toughness can be challenged, and more important than that is your temperament."

He further elaborated, "The point is that you should be able to know how to play turn. And this is what we asked for and this is what we got. I still believe that irrespective of how the wicket was, 124 was chaseable." Was Gambhir right to be so critical, or was the pitch a bigger factor than he let on?

In India's first innings, opener KL Rahul managed 39 in their total of 189. However, the South African bowling attack, spearheaded by Harmer who claimed a match-total of eight wickets, restricted India's lead to a slender 30 runs. And this is the part most people miss... India was already a batsman short during the chase, as captain Shubman Gill was sidelined with a neck injury sustained while batting on Saturday, leaving him "under observation" in hospital. Could this have been a crucial factor in their downfall?

"There are lot of youngsters in that dressing room but in Test cricket, more than skill, you need mental toughness," Gambhir emphasized. The 44-year-old Gambhir, who has now lost nine of his 18 Tests as India's head coach, is known for his direct, often confrontational style.

Let's not forget Gambhir's past. Earlier this year, during the tour of England, he had a heated exchange with Surrey's head groundsman at the Oval after being told to maintain a specific distance while inspecting the pitch. Does this history of outspokenness influence how his current comments are perceived?

Meanwhile, winning captain Bavuma, who undeniably displayed both technique and temperament, acknowledged the pitch's challenges. "Some balls were bouncing nicely, others were squatting," he said. "So that was a bit tricky, which made your cross-batted shots a bit harder. But look, I'll always back my defence." So, while Gambhir downplayed the pitch, Bavuma clearly felt it presented difficulties. Who are we to believe?

South Africa resumed their innings on 91-7 after a frantic final session on day two. Bavuma found a reliable partner in Corbin Bosch, who contributed a valuable 25 runs. Together, they forged a 44-run partnership for the eighth wicket, frustrating the Indian bowlers on Sunday. Bavuma's patient, 136-ball innings, ultimately proved to be the cornerstone of his team's narrow victory.

"From an experience point of view, if you can be successful in some way as a batter, I think it does a lot of good for your confidence," Bavuma noted. The Proteas now carry this confidence into the second and final Test, commencing in Guwahati on Saturday, as they aim to secure their first Test series win in India since 2000.

So, what do you think? Was Gambhir too harsh on the Indian batsmen, or did they genuinely lack the necessary mental fortitude? Was the pitch truly as benign as he claims? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
